It is easier to identify heat-treated structures after transformation, but before tempering. The higher the tempering temperature, the more difficult it is to identify the starting structure. However, hardened steels must be tempered, and they are usually examined afterwards, making it more difficult to identify phases and constituents. The identification of specific microstructural constituents, such as bainite and martensite, becomes increasingly challenging as the tempering temperature approaches the lower critical temperature.
